PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – The Pennsylvania Department of Health has verified that a 40-year-old woman from Jefferson County, who had not been vaccinated, died while infected with measles. Her death occurred on September 12, marking the state’s largest measles outbreak in over thirty years. Laboratory analysis identified the virus in a sample taken from her. After reviewing medical data, officials classified her passing as measles-related. This incident became Pennsylvania’s third measles-linked death in 2026 and heightened concerns over the increasing number of cases across the state.

Pennsylvania measles cases hit 693 as death toll reaches four
Measles cases and hospitalizations continue across Pennsylvania during the 2026 outbreak.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office initially reported that complications associated with a probable measles infection contributed to her death. Subsequent laboratory results confirmed an active measles infection. The woman had not received any measles vaccination. Due to privacy reasons, authorities did not publicly identify her. Her case emerged amid an outbreak affecting both children and adults. Measles can lead to severe health issues, especially among unprotected populations and those more vulnerable to medical complications.

As of September 14, Pennsylvania has recorded 693 confirmed measles cases across 38 counties. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also reported 133 hospitalizations linked to the outbreak. Only four of these confirmed cases involved individuals who were considered appropriately vaccinated for their age. Data indicate that most patients lacked full protection from the MMR vaccine. Since cases began rising during the spring, the outbreak has expanded into multiple communities, making it one of the most significant measles events the state has experienced in decades.

    Pennsylvania’s death toll reaches four

Health authorities confirmed a fourth measles-related fatality on September 15, involving an 18-year-old unvaccinated individual from Mifflin County. The county coroner determined that acute disseminated encephalomyelitis caused the young adult’s death. This rare neurological complication can follow a measles infection. Pennsylvania previously reported two measles-related deaths in Lancaster County on August 25. Those fatalities involved infants too young to receive routine vaccinations, marking Pennsylvania’s first measles-related deaths in 35 years.

Measles transmits through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can remain infectious on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours. Early symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. A rash usually appears several days later, often beginning on the head and spreading downward. Symptoms may develop between seven and 21 days after exposure. Officials recommend that anyone experiencing possible measles symptoms contact a healthcare provider before arriving for treatment.

US measles figures continue to rise

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,294 confirmed measles cases nationwide as of September 10, 2026, with 47 jurisdictions affected. Public health data also reveal a decline in MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarten students, which dropped to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year from 95.2% in 2019-2020. Experts generally consider vaccination rates above 95% essential to prevent sustained measles transmission within communities.

According to public health guidance, two doses of the MMR vaccine offer roughly 97% protection against measles. The disease can lead to complications such as pneumonia and brain swelling. Pennsylvania officials state that nearly 20% of individuals identified during this outbreak have required hospitalization. Those who suspect they may have been exposed are advised to monitor for symptoms over the appropriate period. Anyone exhibiting symptoms should contact a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital to help reduce the risk of further transmission.
