Wildlife Management in National Parks: Lethal Removal of Bear Due to Human Encounters

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – After multiple interactions with visitors, wildlife personnel made the decision to euthanize a black bear near Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park. The animal had accessed human food sources and increasingly approached individuals at close proximity, prompting officials to intervene. As the encounters persisted, staff found it increasingly difficult to deter the bear. Authorities concluded that the ongoing pattern posed a safety concern and, on Sept. 11, the bear was tranquilized and subsequently euthanized in the backcountry.

Grand Teton removes bear after repeated visitor approaches
Bear safety remains a priority at Grand Teton after a food-conditioned black bear was removed.

Earlier in 2026, park staff received reports of a black bear approaching visitors near the popular Delta Lake area. Initially, officials lacked enough evidence to confirm that the bear had been conditioned to human food. That assessment shifted after the bear received several food rewards and kept moving toward people. Wildlife teams tracked its actions and attempted hazing techniques aimed at driving the animal away from trails and recreational zones.

Images released following the event depicted visitors standing only a few feet from the bear. Other photos captured the animal inspecting food, backpacks, and unattended belongings left among rocks and trees. Officials advised visitors to immediately secure their food and equipment if a bear enters their vicinity, emphasizing that under no circumstances should bears be allowed access to human food. The carcass was airlifted from the remote location the next morning by wildlife crews.

Food items from humans can influence bear conduct

According to the National Park Service, bears have the ability to quickly learn to associate humans with easy access to food. Such behavior often results in increased encounters along trails, near campsites, and other heavily visited areas. In this particular case, park managers cited repeated food rewards, close approaches, and resistance to hazing as grounds for their decision. They stated that these factors indicated the bear posed a significant safety threat. Several management options were considered before opting for lethal removal.

While relocation is sometimes used in bear management, officials note that it does not always resolve food-conditioned behavior. Bears may return to familiar areas or face conflicts with other wildlife after being moved. Proper habitat with natural food sources and limited human activity is also essential for successful relocation. For the Delta Lake bear, staff concluded that other practical options had been exhausted. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort when a bear continues to threaten human safety.

Visitors must adhere to bear safety protocols

Grand Teton National Park continues to emphasize that both black bears and grizzly bears are active throughout the park. Visitors are required to stay at least 100 yards away from bears and are advised against approaching them for photos. Backpackers and backcountry explorers should travel in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray within easy reach. Properly securing food and scented items when not in use is also critical. These precautions are designed to prevent bears from obtaining food rewards and becoming accustomed to human presence.

The National Park Service states that approximately one or two bears are typically removed each year after other management measures have failed. The majority of these animals are black bears, according to park guidance. Officials point out that lethal removal is employed only when a bear presents a clear safety risk and all alternative options have been ineffective. The incident at Delta Lake underscores the importance of proper food storage and maintaining distance to minimize conflicts. Park authorities continue to request visitors report bear encounters and adhere to established wildlife regulations.
